We are extremely joyful to welcome readers to the court cases of the sixth Pacific-Rim convention on Multimedia (PCM). the 1st PCM used to be held in Sydney, Australia, in 2000. considering then, it's been hosted effectively through Beijing, China, in 2001, Hsinchu, Taiwan, in 2002, Singapore in 2003, and Tokyo, Japan, in 2004, and eventually Jeju, essentially the most attractive and incredible islands in Korea. This yr, we permitted 181 papers out of 570 submissions together with normal and designated consultation papers. The recognition price of 32% shows our dedication to making sure a truly top of the range convention. this may no longer be attainable with out the whole help of the wonderful Technical Committee and nameless reviewers that supplied well timed and insightful studies. we'd accordingly wish to thank this system Committee and all reviewers. this system of this 12 months displays the present pursuits of the PCM’s. The permitted papers conceal a number themes, together with, all features of multimedia, either technical and creative views and either theoretical and useful concerns. The PCM 2005 software covers instructional classes and plenary lectures in addition to ordinary shows in 3 tracks of oral classes and a poster consultation in one music. we now have attempted to extend the scope of PCM to the inventive papers which don't need to to be strictly technical.

As we can see, our scheme shows consistently the best performance irrespective of the object size and the inter-arrival time. We also gathered real world traces from several commercial VOD servers and performed extensive simulations. Among various results, we presented the result for the Myung Film trace [19]. Note that results from other traces are similar. The trace has 274 video files whose average playback time is 167 seconds with an average inter-arrival time of 44 seconds [19]. Fig. 5(d) shows the hit rate of the four schemes as a function of the cache size with this real workload.

From these results, the RS-PCM results in much better MTTR value than the RS-BRM [2,3]. 5 Conclusions To study the recovery system in the actual VOD service, we implemented the cluster-based VOD servers composed of general PCs and the internal network path. From the implemented VOD server, the RS-BRM was designed with the advantage of RAID-4 in disk retrieving speed and the advantage of RAID-3 in effective memory usage. However, in the RS-BRM, it was found that the input network path of a recovery node was easily saturated with the video blocks transmitted from the survived MMS nodes.
